Returning HomeBas halted his horse on the top of the hill, holding the reins tight as the horse protested. He gazed down at the little village nestled between the forest and the river, feelings he hadn't felt in a long time washing in over him.
The feeling of longing hit him hardest of all. He really missed his family, his friends ... He had been gone fifteen years, so his friends might not be his friends anymore, but family would always be family.
And he was back now. And he would stay. Princess Liv would not need him around anymore, even if he was her familiar. Liv had made a new life for herself ... and Bas just wanted to go back to his old one.
He was here now, but it frightened him. What if things had changed too much? What if someone wasn't here? They could've moved or died ... And what if he wasn't welcome?
Bas shook his head, then loosened the reins, allowing his impatient stallion to continue onwards.
They descended the hill and Bas watched, dread filling him, as the village came closer and
five hour energyi suppose
last week was only an aftershock
of the earthquake you were before.
this place used to vibrate
with metal strings and melodic,
testimonies to life,
emitting coffee-scented moods
and the burn of it too.
i had memorized the
sounds of silence,
i couldn't help but relish it.
no longer had i known
the sounds of folk
and scent of mocha-
you became nothing more
than an echo of the laughter
i so desperately needed to hear again.
then the echoes got louder,
bouncing ferociously off the walls
to be made manifest
i walked into your room
expecting exactly what i found-
an unmade bed,
and an empty beer
(the one that you insisted you needed
just days ago).
i pressed my nose
into the pillow
for incense and cologne and starbucks
to penetrate my mind
and thinking fervently
i already know
what a clean sheet smells like."
